January 2019
01/03 Turned the Rogue in for repairs. Yes, it is almost 3 month after the storm, but that was how long the wait list was at this USAA approved facility. Nice that they already have all the paperwork and it is literally just a drop off. Got a rental paid for a month in the deal too.
01/06 Sun shine again, so I took the remaining books I am trying to save out of their lysol fumed totes and posted the results. Some responded well, some, not so much.
01/08 Took my 7th load of cardboard back to a recycling bin I discovered along my route back to Niceville. Hoarding cardboard will definitely be a target for my monthly purges (on the 11th, the day in October I had too much stuff)
01/09 More looking around at houses in Niceville on an admin day. The inventory is incredibly limited, even with raising my "max looking price" by over 25%. Definitely some sticker shock since I had not priced any out since I bought my current place in 1992.
01/10 My roofing contractor got a permit to replace the roof and put a copy on the entryway. Unfortunately, this permit does not cover repairing the roof - apparently someone dropped the ball between sales and production. Not impressed. Body shop called and USAA simultaneously messaged me that due to additional discovered damage, the Rogue is totaled. So... Now I am looking for transportation too and the rental reimbursement went from 4 weeks to 2 with one remaining... The hits just keep on coming, lol.
01/15 Measured the remaining furniture in the living room/dining room (the only rooms that survived and I moved stuff too). Trying to get an idea on what size storage unit I would need since I probably will want them out of the way while rebuilding or will need them stored until I can find a house if I go that route. It is not looking promising that I can find something in the Niceville/FWB/Destin area...
01/16 Picked up my "new" 2018 Rogue SV from the Hertz Local Edition (HLE) where I bought my first one. I had paid off the old one last year from personal property settlement funds, so I did not have to deal with financing, which was my one disappointment from the first time. With the Auto policy settlement and about $1K out of pocket I was able to really upgrade to the SV package and the rest of the transaction was just as smooth as before. The fact that I am living so close to the HLE this time really made it a lot easier than when I bought while I was living in Panama City.
01/17 Found a nice house in Niceville that was for sale by owner, but listed in the MLS, so my realtor Ami and I took a look. It is at the top end of my price range, but I want to get Jeff out to give me an opinion as well.
01/18 Bought a new shovel and dug out the Jungle Gym pipes; they had been cut off at ground level many years ago. It is a brand I had not associated with shovels, Fiskars, but between a steel shaft, a huge foot place, and pretty sharp blade, it really cut through the live oak roots well with just a bit of "stomp" from me. As I mentioned before, I unearthed the tops of them so that the stump grinder service could see them. They are steel tubes inside of PVC which would probably do a bit of damage. With all of the other holes in the yard, I decided to go ahead and dig these out, since the guy I had contracted to backhoe them out three weeks ago never got back with me - there may be an Aleve in my menu this evening. FYI, a lump of concrete the same size approximately as a bowling ball, does not weigh the same as a bowling ball... The more you know!
01/21 OMG, it is the coldest day I have ever experienced in Florida! Of course it would be on the day that I am getting up early to meet the garage door installers. However, the SV package for the new Rogue has remote start AND heated seats. By the time I got in the car, all the ice had melted off the windscreen and the seat was toasty. Don't know when I will use that combo again, but it sure was nice to have this once. The garage door went in OK, but the 1/2 hp opener could not handle closing the beast. I will use some gift cards from Lowes and get a 1 1/4 hp opener. We wound up with a frontal passage later in the day and things are warming up a bit, but that spawned thunderstorms and a tornado on Tyndall (about 5 miles south as the crow does overhead patterns...) The tarping held up through, so all is good. I was able to use the storm to better align the buckets I bought at Ace earlier and realize that I need several more; while the tarp held, any kind of horizontal wind component can drive rain up and under.
01/23 Was contacted yesterday by Heywood McCord, a siding installer out of Tampa who let me know that Home Depot had awarded him the contract for my siding replacement. He dropped by to measure and get a better idea of what will be required to replace/repair the siding. Weird how timing lines up - nothing for 2 months then 2 contractors within 2 days. Things are looking up!
01/25 Installed the new garage opener and it still won't close the beast. Had to call the installers back including the big boss. It turns out they had the return tension springs cranked way too tight; once they adjusted that everything worked fine. So... my previous opener (a Craftsman) was probably still OK. Although I am a little miffed at that, the new one has encrypted keys and a battery backup that will go for at least one cycle if the power is out when I get home. Since I had the other one since shortly after I bought the house, I am not really that dissapointed to have a new one. Besides, this Genii belt drive is incredibly quiet!
01/26 Hired Arrow Pest control service to clean up the yard, post tree cutting, stump grinding, and post/concrete digging. Backyard is bare, but looks orderly, so an improvement! They still built two more substantial piles in the front yard; hopefully the Mad Max trucks are not done here yet.
01/30 Picked up some more tool boxes to help organize as I am cleaning my garage, decided to break tools down by functions, i.e. grippers and nippers; whackers and hackers, drivers, etc. We do what we can to amuse ourselves or we go crazy, right?
